Freya gets a Swisster!
Welcome to the family, Cedar!!! Meet our 9 week old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.
Last weekend we made a trip to Oregon to go pick up our puppy! We made a trip last month to meet with the breeder and play with the then 3 week old puppies! The litter had 4 females and 4 males. We knew we would be getting one of the females but wouldn’t find out which one until after their temperament test at 7 weeks! The breeder we worked with was absolutely amazing! This was their first litter and we are thrilled to have gotten one of their puppies!
Cedar was part of Cottonwood Farm’s ‘A Fish out of Water’ litter. There were so many awesome little surprises the breeder sent home with us on ‘Gotcha Day”. It made it so fun!
We first became interested in the GSMD during the summer. Already, we had been looking to add another dog to the family around the time Freya turned 2. Freya has been an ideal lab in every way and initially planned to add another English Lab to our posse. As we started looking into breeders we became overwhelmed as it seems that everyone breeds labs. We weren’t confident we would find a breeder who would give us the quality lab we were looking for. The line between English and American labs is very thin but the temperament difference is a major factor for us. Many of the breeders we contacted were either unaware of the difference or unclear about what they were breeding.
Soon after, we stumbled upon the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog breed and fell in love. Previously we had considered a Bernese Mountain Dog but didn’t feel the temperament was quite what we were looking for and would demand too much energy. We spent time researching the GSMD breed finding that it seemed to be everything we were looking for and eventually meeting up with a local Swissy owner. It was pretty clear after that meeting that this was a very impressive breed and the one we wanted to pursue.
We met with a breeder a few hours away in Washington who seemed promising. They had three impressive Swissy’s that we got to meet, each making us fall in love with the breed all the more. Their dog ended up only having 3 puppies and we missed out on that litter. Things always seem to work out though. A few weeks later we found out that they referred us to a breeder in Oregon! We got in contact and now three months later, we have Cedar!
So grateful that everything is going smoothly and we are settling into a new routine!
On to the next adventure…
